A 13.5-Gb/s 140-GHz Silicon Redriver Exploiting Metadevices for Short-Range OOK Communications

The effort to confine the electromagnetic field by silicon passive metadevices has made design of an on-chip wideband sub-terahertz (sub-THz) I/O redriver feasible, paving a new way toward energy-efficient and crosstalk-immune ON–OFF keying (OOK) communications. Two metadevices, namely spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) metawaveguide split-ring resonator (SRR), are exploited build sub-THz low-crosstalk channel high-ON–OFF-ratio modulator, respectively. A signal source combining merit SPPs SRR is introduced. 140-GHz dual-channel composed these fully integrated in 65-nm CMOS technology. realizes both 2 7 –1 xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">31 13.5 Gb/s/lane for OOK modulation. measured energy efficiency 2.6 pJ/bit/lane bit error rate (BER) ≤10 xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">−12 , demonstrating system. power consumption 35.1 mW/lane active area 0.23 mm xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">2 .
